Australia's captain Poised for a Major Role in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.

There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the prospects of being involved.

"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors involved, aside from his injury, but additional elements," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Injury History

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of several home seasons in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to make the squad for the contest.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the opener.

Backup Options

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
